Walking and Hiking

There is a lovely 3 mile walk to be had over to the Grassick Gibbon Centre in Arbuthnott. Lewis Grassick Gibbon was a celebrated Scottish Author whose actual name was James Leslie Mitchell (1901-1935), and whose spiritual home was here in the Howe of the Mearns.

The centre celebrates his life and works including the renowned ‘Sunset Song’ which is widely regarded as one of greatest literary Scottish works of the 20th Century. His ashes are laid to rest in nearby Arbuthnott churchyard, a delightful 13th century church down by the Bervie Water. There is a café and gift shop at the centre.

We can help you plan many local walks within a 15-20 minute drive from Kair, such as:-

Stonehaven to Dunnottar Castle, 1hr 30 circular walk
St. Cyrus Beach and cliff circuit, 1hr 15
Edzell to Edzell Castle, 1 hr round trip
Edzell to Rocks of Solitude, 1hr round trip
Inverbervie Bay to Gourdon 1hr round trip
Gourdon to Johnshaven 2hrs round trip
Clachnaben at Bridge of Dye – 3 hour round-trip hill climb

It should be noted that many of our castles have woodland walks within their estates – these tend to be open from dawn ’till dusk year-round.
